What should a first year CSE student focus on?

Prof. Arvind Srinivasan Posted 4 months ago 1.7K views

The first year builds the base for everything that follows. Focus on a few things and learn them deeply.

Learn one programming language well, such as C, Python or Java.
Start data structures and algorithms in the second semester and practise regularly.
Build small projects, such as a calculator or a to-do app, and keep them on GitHub.
Keep your mathematics and discrete mathematics basics strong.

Marks matter, but practical skills and projects are what you can show in interviews.

Add one more habit: read other peoples code. It improves your own code faster than most courses.

Either works. Many colleges teach C first, and Python is easier for quick projects. Do both over time.

Useful tip. Does it change much for beginners?
