How to start UPSC Civil Services preparation from zero: a practical roadmap

Manish Kumar Posted 2 days ago 2.1K views

The Civil Services Examination has three stages: Prelims, Mains and the Personality Test (interview). Before buying any books, spend a week understanding this structure and reading the latest official notification on the UPSC website.

  • Read the syllabus line by line and keep a printed copy. Every study session should map to a syllabus topic.
  • Start with NCERT books for history, geography, polity, economy and science basics.
  • Pick one standard book per subject instead of collecting many.
  • Read one newspaper daily and make short notes on issues, not on every news item.

Begin answer writing and mock tests early, even if your preparation is incomplete. Steady work over six months matters more than one very long first week.

Well structured. One addition: study the previous year papers before you start reading. They show how UPSC frames questions, which helps you decide how deep to go in each topic.

I followed a similar plan and the biggest gain came from a fixed daily routine. Four focused hours every day beat a few long sessions once a week.
